In short

Checkatrade's guide gives a similar £624 to £1,613 range for repairs. Access is the biggest single cost: a stack that needs a scaffold or a tower costs more to reach than to repair, which is why chimney work is cheapest done alongside a re-roof when the scaffold is already up.

Why access is half of it
A stack on a two-storey terrace in Aberystwyth needs a scaffold or a tower to work on safely, and that can cost as much as the repointing. If the roof itself is due, do the chimney at the same time.
Lime or cement
The stone and soft-brick stacks on older houses across Powys and Ceredigion were built in lime mortar and should be repointed in it. Hard cement pointing on soft stone traps water and blows the face off the masonry within a few winters. A good roofer or mason will say which they are using and why.
When it is the lead, not the mortar
A great many chimney "leaks" are the flashings and the back gutter at the base of the stack, not the stack itself. The repair is lead, and it is cheaper than a rebuild.
