Slipped and broken slates

The commonest call in the region. A slate slips when its nail has rusted through, and the fix is to hook a replacement in with a copper tingle or a slate hook. Several on one slope is the early sign of nail sickness.

Leaks at chimneys and abutments

Where a roof meets a chimney or a higher wall the lead does the work. Cracked, lifted or cement-fillet flashings are behind a large share of the leaks in the old stone houses here, and the repair is to dress or renew the lead rather than smear sealant over it.

Valleys and gutters

Lead valleys crack with age and blocked valley gutters overflow into the house. Clearing, resealing or re-laying a valley is a contained job when caught early.

Ridges and verges

Mortar on ridges and verges cracks in frost and falls out, and the ridge tiles then lift in the wind. Re-bedding or a dry-fix system stops it.
