You do not need to know the name of the job. Start with what you can see and how long it has been going on.
Water coming in
A damp patch after rain is usually a repair: a slipped slate, a cracked flashing or a blocked valley. A patch that appears after every gale on the exposed side of the house is storm damage. A leak beside the chimney breast is nearly always the chimney or its lead.
Slates on the lawn every winter
That is nail sickness, and the honest answer is a re-roof. On an older house here that means re-slating, re-laying the sound originals with new Welsh slate to make up the numbers.
A flat roof that ponds
Felt from the 1970s cannot really be patched. See flat roof replacement in GRP or EPDM.
Buying a house, or arguing with an insurer
A roof inspection by someone who does the work tells you what a mortgage valuation will not.
