The roofline is the timber and the gutter at the edge of the roof, and in a wet climate it is the first thing to rot. Peeling paint, a sagging gutter, green streaks down the wall and a damp patch at the top of the bedroom wall are all the same problem. What roofline work involves

Fascias and soffits

The fascia carries the gutter and the soffit closes the underside of the eaves. Rotten timber is either replaced with new treated timber, painted, or with uPVC boards on a sound backing. Capping a rotten fascia with plastic hides it and traps the damp, and a good roofer will not do it.

Guttering and downpipes

Half-round or ogee uPVC on most houses, cast iron or cast aluminium on period buildings where the look matters. Falls re-set so the water reaches the outlet, joints renewed, and downpipes checked all the way to the gully.

Ventilation and bird protection

New soffits are the moment to add eaves ventilation the roof never had, and to fit eaves guards that keep birds and wasps out of the loft.
